Committing Journalism: The Prison Writings of Red Hog
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (July, 1995)
Authors: Dannie M. Martin and Peter Y. Sussman
Average review score:

Amazing but True
In this book, Dannie Martin and Peter Sussman have done more to shed light on the idiocy of our prison system than any other book I have read on the subject.

Dannie Martin is a convicted criminal, and I expected the usual whining about the system and how he got a poor trial, etc. Instead, what I found was a series of insightful articles written about the prison system by someone who has the ultimate in first hand knowledge. Interwoven with that was the story of the Federal Bureau of Prisons attempts to quiet the man who was exposing their dirty laundry.

Dannie Martin is a natural writer with a wonderful sense of humor. Far from being dry, this book was extremely readable and enjoyable. I think anyone who is helping to foot the bill for the Federal Prison system needs to read this book!!

A book that can change your perception of prisons overnight.
This book should be required for all politicians who vote against prison reform. Seldom have I experienced the range of emotions that this book instilled-rage, indignation, joy, sadness and shame. The authors should be encouraged to give us more of the truth about our "correctional (?) system.

An inspiring tale of a search for truth and a second chance
Committing Journalism:The Prison Writings of Red Hog written by Dannie M. Martin and Peter Y. Sussman tells the story of an essential First Amendment struggle. This collection of over fifty essays and the narrative of the struggles that they are born from, is a gripping survey of the brutal existence inside our prisons. Martin blossomed as a writer while behind bars. He left jail in 1995 with a profession and a chance to create positive energy in a world that he had previously only rebelled against. If only for the surreal drama of his suppression after touching a raw nerve in both the penal system and readers of his regular column in the San Fransisco Chronicle, the book is a must read. Yet, the eloquence and poignance of his reports demonstrate the power of finding the heart of any matter and communicating it with the skills of an accomplished journalist.

The Compleat Traveller in Black

This is the true essence of mysticism
The book was extemely intresting in everyway. I think I would recommend it to anyone who wishes to "think" more about the world around them.

Very Enjoyable and Unique
An interesting look at a world through the eyes of a character who functions as a Deus ex Machina. I enjoyed it.
A being with a singular nature ...
The eponymous traveller winds his way through a strange and bizarre world, maybe of the future, maybe of the past, 'tidying up' the chaotic beings he finds there - imprisoning capricious and vicious elementals, punishing the wicked and granting the wishes of the high- and low- born.

.. but none of the recipients of the wishes get *exactly* what they want ...

Confusion in the Pews: How We Can Make Our Church Catholic Again - One Parish at a Time
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (May, 2002)
Author: Cecilia H. Martin
Average review score:

Excellent book - in spite of the poor English
The "reforms" which many believe to have been initiated by Vatican II are not actually reforms but rebellions, and some of the rebellions mentioned in this book are incredible (a woman dressed in an alb and stole "concelebrating" a Holy Mass and even hearing confessions!).

Priests, bishops, and even some cardinals have rejected the authority of Rome in favor of their own view of what true Catholic worship should be. The result has been a departure from the vertical worship of true liturgy to the horizontal worship of modernism, indifferentism, Americanism, and naturalism. Naturally this departure does not only manifest itself in liturgical abuses, but also in doctrinal abuses (contradicting the Church's stand on birth control, homosexuality, abortion; preaching heresy from the pulpit; inviting blatantly anti-Catholic speakers to speak at Catholic retreats and seminars).

The book gives the best possible advice for those who really want to understand why the quality of our liturgy has declined so terribly in the last few decades; read the Bible, the Catechism, the Vatican II conciliar documents, and the Code of Canon Law; confront (respectfully) the priests who are committing liturgical abuses (I say respectfully because some of them are heretics, while others may truly not know that something they are doing is actually an abuse); confront the bishop; and if necessary, write the Vatican.

I give this book five stars. I was considering only four, since the English usage is so bad. This book is an example of why a good proofreader is necessary and a spell checker is not enough ("form" instead of "from"; "principal" instead of "principle"; etc.).

The undermining of the Catholic Church
This book is important reading for Catholics who take the practice of their Faith seriously. Time and again, during recent years, we have seen purportedly "Catholic" authorities, speaking through the media, contradicting beliefs universally taught pre-Vatican II.
Has the Church changed so radically? Is what was once wrong, wrong no longer? Does it matter if the formal liturgy of the Mass is changed by the Celebrant? Why?
Cecilia Martin documents many abuses, justified by their proponents as "reform," currently assailing the Church. She shows how enemies hijacked the genuine reforms of Vatican II and selectively misinterpreted them to promote an agenda aimed at its destruction. Far fetched? Read the book! It is well written and referenced. Reach your own conclusions. If they are the same as Cecilia's, follow her advice on how to counteract this attack from within.

Very timely and well-written
Cecilia Martin has succinctly presented the background of the present problems in the Catholic Church and who is responsible. All of us need this book to tell us how to defend our church from its enemies within and how to find and use the resources of the Church to be intelligent, well-informed Catholics and apologists. Thanks!

Cooking With Green Tea

An Excellent Guide!
This cookbook is great--not only allowing one to enjoy the taste and the benefits of green tea, but also to experience healthy and delicious foods! I must admit, I always thought of Asian food as a difficult cuisine to prepare at home--but these recipes are easy to follow, and I had great results!

Cooking with Green tea is TAS"TEA"!
I have tried cooking with many different teas - its like having little seasonings in a convient packet. I was pleased to find a book that focused on Green Tea - especially because of Green Teas health benefits. The receipes are easy and fast, and most of all extremely tastey! I did try the 3-day green tea diet/cleansing & found it very easy as well as refreshing! I had a lot of entergy afterwards. The Green Tea vegetable soup is one of my favorites! I highly recommend the spring rolls and cold noodles in peanut sauce. Easy recipes with great taste that are good for you! [...]

YUM!!!! What a great cookbook!
I've been a fan of green tea for a long time, but I had no idea what a difference it can make in cooking! These recipes are simple, and there's a lot of variety -- everything from sauces and appetizers to entrees and desserts. The ones I've tried so far have worked out great. The author's commentary puts each dish in an interesting and useful context (health, cultural, etc.) If you're looking for a fun, interesting, and accessible collection of new dishes to try, I recommend this book!

The chemistry sizzles
This is one of Deborah Martin's best! The chemistry between Rene and Elina sizzles. The scenes are vividly described(so as not to miss anything). I own this book since 1993 and I don't ever regret buying it.

Beautiful Romance
Definitely worth reading over and over again. This historical romance tells the story of a young girl, Elina, left all alone in the world struggling to proof her identity and to claim her rightful status in New Orleans society and most of all, to proof her love to the only man who stole her heart.

Her struggles were further hindered by those who wanted to get rid of her and would do everything in their power including murder, to prevent Elina from divulging her real identity.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a tense romantic love story.

READ MORE THAN THREE TIMES AND I LOVED IT. !MUST BE READ!
IT'S THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ. I LOVED THE PASSION BETWEEN RENE AND ELINA. IT'S A BOOK YOU COULD READ A 1,000 TIMES AND NEVER GET TIRE. IT'S A BOOK WHICH I RECOMMEND TO READERS.

The Crime of the Century: Richard Speck and the Murder of Eight Nurses
Published in Paperback by Bantam Books (April, 1993)
Authors: Dennis L. Breo and William J. Martin
Average review score:

A real-life nightmare
Oh, this is a true story, all right. I was a child in the Chicagoland area when the nurses were killed, and I understood (superficially, at least) what Speck had done and the impact it had on the adults around me. "Richard Speck" became like "The Bogeyman," or the other monsters that haunt children's nightmares. So as an adult, I was eager to confront the demon of my girlhood by reading this detailed and serious study. I was not prepared for how genuinely horrible the crimes were, especially against the backdrop of those more innocent times. I had not been aware of how close Speck came to getting away. I had real admiration for the lawyers, jurors and judge who worked to ensure that our system of justice worked -- even for this piece of human flotsam. Most of all, I rediscovered a real-life heroine, Corazon Amurao. No one should have had to endure what she lived through that summer night, and the way she stood up to Speck in court was awe-inspiring. Hers is a truly indomitable spirit. But I'm still as afraid Richard Speck today as I was more than 35 years ago. He was my introduction to evil, and it seems that the killers who have come after him, from Bundy to Gacy to the Washington snipers, have just gotten stronger and meaner and smarter.

A chilling read from Speck's prosecutor.
As an armchair criminologist and true crime fan, the story of Richard Speck has been the one story that has haunted me for years. I long waited for the gruesome story of Speck and his vicious murder spree to be told in detail. Now, with the release of this excellent book, Speck's prosecutor William Martin gives us an eyewitness view into the crimes and trial of Richard Speck. With the help of Dennis Breo, Martin weaves a page-turning, frightening tale that reads as well as anything by Stephen King. Except this horrifying story is true. Martin reveals many never-before-known facts about the case and pays a great deal of attention to accuracy and detail especially in his depiction of the murders through the eyes of the heroic witness, Corazon Amurao. This book is a must read account of the mass murders that introduced a shocked world to a new age of violence and mass murder. I only wish that they would revise this book to include the discovery of the Speck porno/confession videotape in 1996.

A Very Good Read
A well researched, exciting read. You've got a story that everyone knows its ending, but you keep turning the pages to see what happens next. What can I say that will inspire someone to read this book? It is a lengthy work through which you will race. A marvelous study of all that was known about a most diabolical personality and the human wreckage he left in his wake.

Dawn's Big Date
Published in Turtleback by Demco Media (January, 1992)
Author: Ann Matthews Martin
Average review score:

great book!!!
Dawn is about to meet her pen pal who is also logan's cute cousin! She feels like she's not good enough so she gets herself a bizzare makeover and tries to be someone she's not. But at the end of the book, she starts being herself again and gets along fine with him. Mary Anne was being a bit superficial in the book and not acting like her sweet self at all, but it's still a good read.

Wonderful!
Dawn's Big Date is one of those books you can read over and over again, and still be entertained. Dawn is finally going to meet her penpal, Louis, who is also Logan's cousin from Kentucky. Before he comes to Stoneybrooke, Mary Anne gives a FEW hints and suggestions to Dawn about how she should look when Louis sees her, what make-up she should wear, stuff like that. Dawn bends over backwards before Louis arrives, picking out new outrageous clothes, tons of make-up, and fancy new hairstyles, just so she will give Louis a good impression. But when he finally arrives, he doesn't seem to like the new Dawn. Uh-oh... The side plot of this book is very good as well. Norman Hill is an overweight kid, who is being constantly teased by his sister and friends, and hounded by his parents. The baby-sitters want to help Norman out, but how? Then Stacey suggests that Norman tears one of his sister's mean drawings, and he begans to feel some self-respect, which is a tremendous help. Overall, this book was excellent. One of my favorite BSC books ever. Read it!

It's a pretty good book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dawn and Mary Anne double date.Logan is with Mary Anne, and Dawn is with Logan's cousin Lewis from Logan's old town in Kentucky. But when Mary Anne and Dawn are at the movies with them Mary Anne starts pinching Dawn and interupting her and doesn't let her talk because she doesn't want Dawn to make a fool of herself. So they start fighting after that. What will happen? Read and and find out.

Seller Top Notch
The book I received was in terrific shape and was definitely what I expected. I'd definitely buy from this seller again.

Recommended by the accidental quilter
You've got all these quilts! What are you going to do with them? Beautiful color plates show how the movers and shakers in the quilt making and quilt collecting world display quilts around the house. I was particularly intrigued with the chapter on Sewing Studios. They are warm, homey places that employ many antique pieces for storage and decoration. And every idea doesn't require a show place of a home either. On page 35--they show several old quilts tucked into an easy chair and covering a table--it would look cosy anywhere!

Awesome interior spaces for quilt lovers
This is every quilter's dream book. Beautiful quilts used in very creative settings. From country to contempory - this book's got it all.

Demystifying Grant Seeking: What You REALLY Need to Do to Get Grants
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (31 August, 2001)
Authors: Larissa Golden Brown and Martin John Brown
Average review score:

A Must-Have for Proposal Writers
What do you really need to do to get grants? Get thee a system! Not just any system: this one.

Proposal writing is science and art. The art part is writing; the science part is reserach, strategy, observation and painstaking work. Demystifying Grant Seeking is about the painstaking part, but the authors skillfully render the components in managable, sutainable portions palatable for the busiest of non-profit professionals. I always recommend it to my students and clients.

Demystified!
For anyone entering the realm of grant seeking for non profits - or seeking more effective ways to do their job - Demystifying Grant Seeking is a powerful tool. This book takes the reader through the steps of setting up a usable office, making matches between agencies and foundations, writing grant applications, evaluating the process and doing it all again, tighter, quicker, better. The authors use one agency as an example, taking their audience through the entire process. No question is left unanswered, and all questions are answered patiently, graciously, and in easily understood language. This book is a great resource.

The Real Way to Write Proposals.
This is a grant-seeking system that truly works: for a newcomer, an experienced proposal writer in a too-busy office, and anyone wanting to streamline his or her efforts while improving quality and consistency in proposal writing.

Good proposal writers know that much time is spent learning about the non-profit itself -- its history, programs and plans; sometimes helping to develop programs or shaping them to enhance the appeal to funders; and collecting information and support materials to satisfy the donor and dramatize the project. The authors' checklist is critical to solid internal research.

Chapters on collecting, developing and refreshing support materials and program, donor and grants management files have excellent ideas for simplifying work and improving the delivery of quality information.

Thank goodness the authors dispell myths that "all you need is one well-written proposal" and that "you need to 'know somone' to get a grant".

Successful proposal writing is serious business; this book helps you do it well.

It's a generous gift to those who work so hard on behalf of good causes. Read it and keep it.

Don't Know Much About the Presidents
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (24 December, 2001)
Authors: Kenneth C. Davis and Pedro Martin
Average review score:

This book is the Best
I like this book because it tells me all the facts about
the presidents and I love to study presidents. My 14 year
old sister needed help with her report on Theodore Roosevelt and
Franklin D. Roosevelt and she asked me because she knew I would
know some things! I have checked "Don't know much about the
Presidents" out of the library and since I have to take it back,
my dad said he would buy me my own copy to keep!

A Great Intro to the Presidents
This book is a wonderful introduction to learning about the presidents, even for younger children who express an interest. Our five-year-old is a good reader, and can manage much of this book herself. A great one to keep in the back of the car for short (or long) trips. Or pick a president each night to learn about at bedtime. This book is written at a level that can be appreciated by the younger set, but because it's got a sense of humor and some fun facts about each president, will also be enjoyed by older children (and adults!). We're enjoying re-learning about the presidents again with our daughter!

Everything You Wanted to Know about Our Presidents, and More
Do you know who was the youngest president ever elected to office, who served the shortest term, and who served the longest? Do you know which president had fifteen children, which was an avid fisherman, and who brought a goose, wallaby, donkey, lion cub, raccoon, two cats, twelve dogs, and birds to the White House when he moved in? The answers to these questions and much, much more can be found in Kenneth Davis' marvelously entertaining and engaging, Don't Know Much About The Presidents. Written in an easy to read, question and answer, conversational format, Mr Davis packs this book chock full of historical information, fun facts, and trivia. Learn about each of our 43 president's talents, idiosyncracies and family, his inauguration, important achievements, and life in the White House during the time he served. Each biographical spread is complemented by Pedro Martin's charmingly witty and humorous illustrations that enhance the text and just add to all the fun. With a detailed timeline highlighting important and interesting historical events running continuously along the bottom of each page, Don't Know Much About The Presidents is a treasure trove of fun and information that's perfect for kids 8 and up. So find out which president's good luck charm was a red carnation, and enjoy!
